What’s Holding You Back?

Do you do your Marketing and Sales activities at the beginning of the day or when everything else is complete?  Are marketing and sales activities the most important thing on your agenda or the least important thing on your agenda?  Are you putting off important tasks by telling yourself you are too busy?  When you are “too busy” what is it that you are doing that is more important than your Marketing and Sales activities?

As a business owner, we wear so many hats and juggling all of our priorities seems to be beyond impossible.  Often, we have a plan and some crisis, emergency or perceived priority takes precedence over our plan.  Surely, we will get to the “important” tasks that were on our plan tomorrow.  Have you ever noticed that tomorrow never comes?  How does that happen?

The challenge is doing the stuff you don’t want to do before anything else gets in your way.  It is so hard to do the things you are afraid to do or really don’t want to do, when there are so many other things you can make yourself busy doing.  How can you overcome the fear?  How can you do the things you don’t want to do first because you know it is those things that will make your business successful.

There are many reasons why small businesses fail in their first five years of existence.  The traditional reasons why businesses fail are undercapitalization, growing too quickly and/or a broken business model.  Obviously, knowing how to solve these challenges can be the difference between a successful business and one that doesn’t make it to their 5 anniversary.

When business owners start out they are full of passion for their work and the energy to work the long hours it can take to be successful.  The difference between the business owners who succeed and the ones that don’t is the realization that having passion and working hard are only part of the equation.  You cannot have a successful business if you do not have clients who purchase your product or service on a regular basis.  The only way to get those clients is to always be marketing and selling your product or service.

If you do not make time daily, weekly and monthly to do your marketing and sales activities, your business will not grow and eventually, you will not have enough clients to stay in business.  So, the key is to start your day with a plan, do the most important activities first without fail (marketing and sales) and you will soon see the fruits of your labor.
